DistoKick is a kick drum synthesiser for Max4Live. A sine wave tone generator and a noise generator are shaped via graphical ADSR envelopes. The top two envelopes control amplitude, while the bottom two control pitch modulation. Edit points are added by mouse click, setting these controls apart from more conventional dials or switches. Both tone generators have individual volume controls, as well as on/off switches.
DistoKick is short for Dystopian Kick. The sound is designed to be dark and rich. The sub-heavy sine generator achieves the necessary heft, while the noise generator, which can also be used for pad sounds, adds some dirt. A simple, yet effective distortion effect adds a sinister note to the resulting kick drum.
The colour scheme and UI was chosen to reflect the sound design. Greyscale colours and an aggressive font mirror the sound of the synthesiser and distinguishes itself against other drum synthesiser designs. The use of graphical ADSR envelopes and a playable kick button encourage a different approach to sound design. The step sequencer is independent of both the Clip and Session view in Ableton Live and allows the user to focus solely on the synthesiser.
