The DistoKick is a kick drum synthesizer for max4live. The synth consists of two sound generators. The one is a Sub(sine) generator, the other a noise generator. These can be edited with the “function” graphics. In the upper “function” objects, the envelope curve (ADSR) can be edited. The lower graphics can be used for modulation of both of the generators. The editing happens via drawing dots with the mouse in the desired “function” object. This graphic Editing provides a way of programming tone generators different from the usual slider based interface. Both generators do have an individual usable volume knob, as well as an on and off button to mute them out.
The sound concept of the DistoKick is been reflected by the name and the Design. “DistoKick” is short for “Dystopian Kick”. The sound had to be gloomy and thick. This has been partially realized by the sub sine generator. The nose generator gives the sound a dirty touch, which can be used as a part of the Kick or used on its own. Everything is been rounded by the simple but effective distortion effect. This is a essential part of the sound of the drum synth, to give him the last sinister finishing.
The most important thing for the Design was to adapt to the vision of the sound. The coloring of the synthesizer is kept plain. The font gives the design the special something and fits perfectly to the sound concept. Additionally the DistoKick separates from every other instrument. By using the function objects, the visual perception of the instrument is been strengthened. This results in a differing ways in programming the synthesizer. By implementing the playable kick button and the step sequencer, the DistoKick is totally independent from the Clip/Session view and one can completely focus on synthesizing.
