This project has been design by Maximilian Weber in his bachelor thesis in summer 2016. He was curated by Prof. Macro Kuhn (first examiner) and Prof. Alexis Baskind (second examiner)
‘Kontraktion’ is a performative system, which allows one, to connect sound and muscle contraction. The actor wears a wrist band which has several sensors attached to. With these sensors information about the orientation of the arm and the muscle movement are determined. The collected data is been transmitted in real time and wireless to the computer, where the sound is synthesized and made hearable via speakers (possibly surround).
The extrapolation of the muscle contraction in the space brightens the actors sense for unknown nerves. This continuous dialog between human and machine creates a bio feedback between intention, movement, space and perception.
The actor will see subtile, usually hidden impulses of his own body for the first time. The spatio-temoporal connection between controlled, fine muscle movement and sonic perception creates a new form of expression. This system induced expansion of consciousness allows the actor to modify and control the sound proactively. The actor embodies every aspect of the sound and his body will become the interface of a digital instrument.
