Optical Modulation Controller is a project developed under the guidance of Lars Roth in the course Sound & Space.
We can create short bursts of light by manipulating the rear wheel of a bicycle and its movement. An opto-electric light sensor captures these bursts and relays them to Max/MSP where the burst duration can be used to calculate the rate of rotation. We can use this cyclical movement as a sort of optical tremolo: what you see is what you hear.
The resulting data can be used in Max/MSP as the basis of a generative composition for a sound sculpture. The installation constantly evolves as it tracks the interaction with the bicycle: speed, acceleration and current position determine the composition and structure of the piece.
