‘Optical Modulation Controller’ is a project created in the course “Bewegtbild im Raum” (moving pictures in space) by Lars Roth.
By partially dimming a light source through the back wheel of a bike, short light impulses occur, which are being captured by a light sensor. In Max/MSP we calculate the rotation speed by measuring the continuity of these impulses and use the cyclic movement as a kin of optical tremolo. What you see is what you hear.
The Evaluation of the data via Max/MSP allows us to use the mechanical movement of the wheel as a fundament for generative composing. This way, the sound sculpture changes continuously while interacting with the wheel: speed, acceleration and current position are controlling the compositorial and dramaturgic parameter and create an interactive sound installation.
